How to Improve VPN Speed
Improving your VPN speed often comes down to reducing the "overhead" of encryption and shortening the physical distance your data travels. Since Unlocator offers a unique Hybrid feature, you have some specific advantages other VPNs don't.
Here is a guide to optimizing your Unlocator VPN for maximum performance.
Switch VPN Protocol
Unlocator supports several protocols, but they are not created equal when it comes to speed.
The Recommendation: Use WireGuard. Here's how you can easily switch your VPN protocol in the Unlocator VPN app:
- Sign into the app
- Go to Settings
- From there, click on 'Connections'
- Then, select 'VPN Protocol'
- Choose WireGuard.
Why: WireGuard is much newer and leaner than older protocols like OpenVPN or L2TP. It connects faster and offers significantly higher throughput, especially on mobile devices and modern PCs.
Alternative: If WireGuard isn't available on your specific device, use OpenVPN UDP. The "UDP" version is faster for streaming and gaming than "TCP."
Choose the Right Server
The laws of physics apply here: the further the server is from you, the slower the connection.
Pick a Nearby Server: If you just want privacy, connect to the city/country closest to your actual physical location.
Check Server Load: If a server feels sluggish, disconnect and try a different city in the same country. Even if both are in the US, a Chicago server might be less congested than a New York one.
Optimize Your Hardware
Sometimes the bottleneck isn't the VPN; it's the device or the Wi-Fi.
Use Ethernet: If you are on a PC or a streaming box (like Nvidia Shield or Apple TV), a hardwired connection will always be more stable and faster than Wi-Fi.
